Alice Carpenter earned a Bachelor in Arts Education from The Ohio State University and continued her studies through selected course work at the Columbus College of Art and Design. Her work has been included in numerous solo, juried and invitational exhibitions throughout Ohio including the Butler Institute of American Art’s Midyear National Juried Exhibition; the Inaugural Juried Exhibition at the Riffe Gallery; the Ohio Art League Fall Exhibition where she was awarded an honorable mention; C.A.W.’s (Creative Arts of Women) Remnants at O.S.U.’s Urban Arts Space; and the Zanesville Museum of Art Annual Exhibition. In 2015, Carpenter was also a finalist for the Greater Columbus Art’s Council Individual Arts Fellowship.

"My current work is an exploration of the monotype, an unpredictable and immediate process which achieves a unique and timeless result. The monochromatic palette is challenging and appealingly stark, and the intimate scale encourages contemplation. Abstract, yet on the edge of narrative, my work invites the viewer to complete the piece with their own introspection." - Alice Carpenter

On her unique process:

"I apply water soluble relief inks to a glass plate. Images are created by drawing into the inks, removing inks from certain areas and/or painting in details.

My technique differs with the standard monotype process in that I do not apply paper directly onto the inked plate. Instead I role a brayer over the inked plate to lift the image and then roll the brayer over paper to transfer the image.

My work is created from either a single roll of the brayer or built up from a number of rolls from the “image inked” brayer.  Once the image is on paper I use hand painting and/or the scratching away the surface inks back to paper to clarify and add details." - Alice Carpenter
