Artist's Statement
“Put a painting on every table”
This has been my motto—to bring a small piece of beauty to people’s everyday lives.
These dishes have been a part of me for a very long time. In a way, they are finally making their debut. I made the first molds for them as a teenager. They are basic, rudimentary forms; simple, basic, unpretentious shapes that are each individual and a bit asymmetrical, like you and me.
The surfaces of the dinnerware have evolved over the years and will probably continue to change. I look at the world around me and extract forms from everyday shapes—curtains, strings of lights, road crossings, a moon framed by power lines. I like to look at the essence of forms, yet leave the paintings open enough for the viewer to bring their own interpretation to the table. I feel the paintings and surfaces compliment the shapes on to which I am painting them.
The fact that these paintings are on dishes makes them more approachable. If these images were on paper or canvas, they would possess a very different feeling. The paintings are on dishes, to be used everyday—to have a painting on every table.
